We’ve all been there, feeling that sense of overwhelm, NO Monday motivation for work, with the mountain of paperwork (or emails) piled up that we have to get done, but at the same time paralyzed out of fear, fatigue or just not “feeling” it.  Depression and anxiety can be a HUGE factor, which has caused me to crawl into the fetal position on more than one occasion.  But we can’t always just hide from reality. We have to find some way to deal with it. But how?

Here are 7 ways to get your Monday motivation for work

1.  MAKEUP – A GIRL’S NO-FAIL MONDAY MOTIVATION FOR WORK WEAPON

I’m just like the next girl who works at home and would rather be in my yoga pants all day with my hair up in a ponytail, and much of the time I do truth be told! But if I’m having an especially hard time getting going, there’s something about getting dressed, and putting my fancy makeup on that gives me a little boost of confidence. You’ll be surprised what a mini makeover can do for your productivity and motivation! Am I right ladies?

2. FAKE IT TILL YOU MAKE IT

I used to tell my Zumba students, “Shake it till you make it!”.  Well this time time I’m telling you to Fake it till you make it – same concept.

Truth be told, as an instructor, there were many days I did NOT have any motivation, especially on a Monday no less, and I had to apply this motto to myself. Maybe you’re not feeling uber productive today. Just start working on something small, and then build on that.  Small accomplishments lead to BIG accomplishments. Before you know it you’ll have enough energy to get it all done!  Well maybe not ALL of it, but a good chunk at least!

3. EXERCISE

I know what you’re thinking, how am I supposed to exercise when I don’t have any motivation in the first place? The Scientific American Magazine notes some of the benefits of exercise which include, “better cardiovascular health, decreased risk for diabetes, boosted mood, and perhaps even a leaner physique.” No downside here!

Exercise has long been known to give you endorphins which make you feel happier and in turn, more motivation!  You may not feel like it at first, but just get going and after 5 minutes you’ll be moving and grooving and ready to take on the world! And if you can find an exercise buddy to join you? Double the fun!

4. RELAX

But isn’t that the opposite of motivation? Well when you take a break, or relax for a while, it helps to recharge your batteries.  Relaxing can mean different things to different people: yoga, meditation, bible reading, walking the dog, swimming, whatever YOU personally find relaxing, is what you need to do. So take a break, I promise it won’t kill you or your business.  You’ll come back with more clarity, and yes, motivation!

5. KICK THE CLUTTER

Being OCD like I am, there’s nothing I hate worse than a messy desk.  I absolutely cannot get any work done with piles of paper strewn everywhere. When we had our contracting business, my husband would always have a tornado on his desk because he wasn’t very organized and wouldn’t throw anything away.

I about had a heart attack every time I walked in that room. That was certainly not helping me on the “Monday motivation for work” meter scale! There’s a connection between clutter and a chaotic life.  Take a little time to organize things, throw all those sticky notes away,  clear out your inbox, and just give yourself room to breathe, and of course, a little room on the desk for your coffee cup!

6. MAKE A CHECKLIST OF “3”

What do I mean by that? Because of my Type A/OCD personality type, having a list gives me the motivation I need to get things done. There’s nothing more satisfying than getting something checked off my list!

You don’t have to make a long list though, make it a list of just things that HAVE to get done today.  Anything else is just the cherry on top! Even if you only get 1 or 2 things done, that’s better than nothing right?

7.  HAVE SOME FUN!

WHAT? You mean I can work AND have FUN too??!!  Yes miss thang you can! I work at home and it can get quiet and boring, which is not a good recipe for motivation. So I always have to take breaks and play music to keep me going. I also have four chihuahuas that look up at me with their beady little eyes, and so when I need a break I give in to their charms and give them a snack or take them for a walk.

So Laugh, have coffee, keep snacks around the office, have a solo dance when nobody’s looking, just have FUN. Give yourself permission to HAVE FUN!  Could you use a good laugh? Check out the article on The Healing Power of Laughter

There are lots more ways to get more of that good old Monday motivation for work we all need to start off our week, but I hope this at least gives you a few ideas to think about when you’re feeling that slump.
